Different reactors use different isotopes, depending on size requirements. Denser reactors will use a higher ratio of U-238 to U-235, but U-238 is harder to make. The particle that hits the uranium is a neutron. ![]() The explosion can be thought of as releasing photons and heat energy. The two atoms that split away are known as daughters.
